Lead Product Engineer, AI Observatory

Note: This role is only open to U.S. citizens.

What we do

Gladstone’s mission is to ensure that future AI systems are developed and used safely. We make it easy for the US government and other organizations to make fast high-quality decisions in AI policy, strategy, procurement, and risk management. Find out more about us and our mission here.

Our core product is a web app called the AI Observatory. The AI Observatory helps acquisitions officers in the U.S. government accelerate their procurement process, reach information parity with tech companies on AI, and push for important AI safety features.

About the role

Gladstone’s AI Observatory is a web app that helps government acquisition teams search through past procurement contracts quickly. Right now, this is a huge problem. Whenever an acquisition officer overlooks a past contract, they end up spending tens of millions of dollars to rebuild a capability that already exists somewhere else. The government’s internal search tools today are so inadequate that acquisition officers cultivate social networks as their best way to share past contracts with one another. Since a single missed contract can cost tens of millions in duplicated effort, this is a multi-billion dollar problem across the government.

The AI Observatory fixes this problem by indexing tens of thousands of contracts and giving acquisition officers access to fast, seamless search and summarization. We've already proved out a prototype and landed a multi-million dollar deal to iterate and scale it, beginning with a rollout to teams in the U.S. Air Force.

You’ll be working directly with Gladstone's founders on the product engineering that will support this rollout. Here’s what that will involve:

  • Writing clean, maintainable code on a fast cadence. ⚡️
  • Collaborating with the founders to define product scope and iterate on features. 🔄
  • Tracking and improving metrics like DAUs and iteration velocity. 📈
  • Interacting directly with customers at least once a week. 🤝

This is an IC role where most of your day-to-day work will be writing code. You’ll be working directly with one of our founders, who’ll be covering the PM role for this project. But part of your job will also involve discussing technical and product tradeoffs with the founders, and putting your personal stamp on the product roadmap. That means you’ll need to spend some amount of time talking directly to customers, to ensure you can form an informed view on what to build next.

This is a role with room to grow. Depending on your personality and inclination, your responsibilities could expand in one of two different directions. If you’re drawn to technical challenges, the role could grow to encompass engineering responsibility across the organization. Or if you’re mainly product-driven, you could come to own the AI Observatory product with accountability for KPIs.

Must-haves and comp

This is a full-time, senior role. You need to have at least 2 years’ experience building and shipping software products as part of a cross-functional team. We’ll expect you to directly contribute to shaping product development. In other words, you won’t just be implementing PRDs.

The base comp for this position is $150,000 - $200,000 USD, plus 1-2% equity on a 4-year schedule, vesting monthly. The final amounts will depend on your experience level. Additionally, we expect to offer variable end-of-year bonuses that will depend on follow-on contract size.

This is a remote role, but you do need to be physically based in the United States. You also need to be a U.S. citizen, since parts of this project may involve handling controlled or classified information.

The tech stack

  • NextJS / TypeScript app
  • Tailwind on the frontend
  • Supabase vector backend using Ada embeddings
  • GPT-4 for document summarization

If you’re familiar with all these technologies, that's a major plus, but NextJS / TypeScript is the most important. We also expect you’re comfortable using Copilot + GPT-4 in your dev workflow.

We think you'll love us if:

  • You’re mission-driven. 🎯 You’re not necessarily an expert on AI risk / AI safety, but you care about working on something with maximum impact.
  • You’re comfortable having written discussions. ✍️ We work remote and talk regularly, but a lot of our strategic discussion happens in writing. We find this helps keep our meetings tight and focused on substance.
  • You can move fast. 🚀 In AI, there's a world-shattering development at least once a week. We all need to keep up, roll with the punches, and adapt on the fly.
  • You can wear many hats. 🤠 Our team is small and nimble, and we all do what it takes to get the job done. If you see a problem that you know how to fix, dive in and fix it.

We’ll definitely love you if:

  • You like our mission — to make AI safe, now and in the future.
  • You can move fast.
  • You can listen to someone describe a need, then turn their description into a feature or an experiment.
  • When you see a problem, your first instinct is “how do I fix this?”
  • You can write well.
  • If the stars align, you just might want to work in this area for the next ten years.
