Note: This role is only open to U.S. citizens.
Gladstone AI’s mission is to ensure that future AI systems are developed safely and don’t pose a danger to humanity. We help governments and enterprises reach information parity with cutting-edge AI labs so that they can respond to new advances in ways that recognize the risks they introduce. Find out more about us and our mission here.
One of our products is a web app called the AI Observatory. The AI Observatory supports our mission by helping acquisitions officers in the U.S. government accelerate their procurement process, reach information parity with tech companies on AI, push for important AI safety features, and exert pressure on industry to develop AI control techniques.
Gladstone’s AI Observatory is a web app that helps government acquisition teams search through past procurement contracts quickly. This is a huge problem: if an acquisition officer overlooks a past contract, they could end up spending tens of millions of dollars to rebuild from scratch a capability that already exists somewhere else. But today, the government’s internal search tools are so inadequate that acquisition officers have to actively cultivate social networks as their best way to share past contracts with one another. The AI Observatory fixes this problem by indexing tens of thousands of contracts and giving acquisition officers access to fast, seamless search and summarization — powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4.
Since a single missed contract can cost tens of millions in duplicated effort, this is a multi-billion dollar problem across the government. The government knows this, and they’ve awarded us a seven-figure deal to iterate and scale the AI Observatory, beginning with a rollout to teams in the U.S. Air Force. You’ll be working directly with the founders on the product engineering that will support this rollout.
Here’s what that will involve:
This is an individual contributor role where most of your day-to-day work will be writing code on a maker’s schedule. You’ll be working directly with one of our co-founders, who’ll be covering the PM role for this project. But part of your job will also involve discussing technical and product tradeoffs with the founders, and putting your own personal stamp on the product roadmap. That means you’ll need to spend some amount of time talking directly to customers, to ensure you can form an informed view on what to build next.
This is a role with lots of room to grow. Depending on your personality and inclination, your responsibilities could expand in one of two different directions. If you’re mostly drawn to technical challenges, the role could expand over time to encompass engineering responsibility across the organization. On the other hand, if you’re mostly product-driven, you could eventually own the AI Observatory product with full accountability for all its metrics and KPIs.
This is a full-time, senior role. You need to have at least 2 years’ experience building and shipping software products as part of a cross-functional team. This is a crucial requirement, because we’ll expect you to directly contribute to shaping product development. In other words, you won’t just be implementing product manager PRDs.
The base comp for this position is $150,000 - $200,000 USD, plus 1-2% equity on a 4-year schedule, vesting monthly. The final amounts will depend on your experience level. Additionally, we expect to offer variable end-of-year bonuses that will depend on follow-on contract size.
This is a remote role, but you do need to be physically based in the United States 🇺🇸. You also need to be a U.S. citizen, since parts of this project may involve handling controlled or classified information.
The AIO sits on a simple tech stack:
If you’re familiar with all these technologies, that's a major plus, though NextJS / TypeScript is the most important. We also expect you’re comfortable using Copilot and GPT-4 in your dev workflow.
Send Edouard an email at edouard@gladstone.ai. Attach your resume, tell me why you want to work with us, and ask me any questions you have about the role! I promise I’ll respond to you one way or the other by October 27th, provided that:
We’re looking forward to hearing from you. 😃
